Microsoft Spends $6 Billion, Anyone Interested in the News ?

Microsoft has acquired an online advertising firm called aQuantive for about $6 billion. That's about 4x the Google-Youtube deal and 2x the Google-DoubleClick deal.

With this acquisition, Microsoft plans to create an online advertising platform for it's own properties like MSN, Windows Live, Xbox Live, and Office Live, as well as for third party publishers..

The very surprising part is that this story is not on Techmeme yet. This latest screen capture of Techmeme homepage shows that iPhone rumor is still the top story in the blogosphere.

Either the news about Microsoft acquiring aQuantive hasn't spread yet or announcements from Redmond don't excite people (read bloggers) enough.

Techmeme sported a very different look when Google acquired YouTube for $1.65 Billion.

Google Gadgets on Web Pages Without Google Branding - Quite Possible

Google Gadgets, which were previously available only for iGoogle and Google Desktop, can now be embedded inside any blog or web page using a line of HTML/Javascript code.

Select any Google Gadget from the official Google list and click the "Add to your webpage" button. You can also modify the width, height, frame border colors and other properties of the Google widget so that it blends perfectly in you web pages.

Here's a screen capture of the popular Calendar / Clock Google gadget placed on a webpage.

Google Gadgets Screenshot
Every Google Gadget has a title, an "Add to Google" rectangular button and a tag line that says "Gadgets Powered by Google"

In order to display a Google Gadget on your webpage without these extra Google related links / images, here are the steps involved:

1. Replace the <script> tag in the Google Gadget code with <iframe>

Before:
<script src="http://gmodules.com/ig/ifr?..
...url=http://www.google.com/ig/modules/datetime..
..%23999999&output=js></script>

After:
<iframe src="http://gmodules.com/ig/ifr?..
...url=http://www.google.com/ig/modules/datetime..
..%23999999&output=js></iframe>

2. Replace the parameter output=js in Gadget HTML code with output=html

3. Delete the "w" and "h" parameter from the HTML code and add the following attributes to the iFrame URL:

height = "300" width = "250" frameborder = "0" scrolling = "no"

[The height and width values may be different in your case]

The final Google Gadget code that doesn't display the Google Logo or any other hyperlinks to Google Gadgets directory will look something like this:

<iframe src="http://gmodules.com/ig/ifr?..
...url=http://www.google.com/ig/modules/datetime..
..%23999999&output=js height="300" width="250"..
..frameborder="0" scrolling="no"></iframe>

Important: Modify the Google Gadgets code at your own risk as it might go against Google guidelines that say:
You agree not to modify or remove the "Gadgets powered by Google" text and link or the "+Google" button or other promotional text or images provided by Google with the gadget code.

You understand and agree that Google retains the option to replace the "+Google" button with content, including advertising or promotional content, that occupies the same space and position on your page when you display the gadget.

Move Your Blogs from Blogger to WordPress The Easy Way

If you have been planning to migrate your blog from Blogger to Wordpress but found the whole process of importing blogger posts with comments into Wordpress too technical and complicated, here's a very good news for you.

You can now move all blogs posts and comments from your Blogger account into your WordPress blog with the click of a button - it's so simple that even mom can do it as long as her blog is hosted on the new Blogger platform.

Move from Blogger to Wordpress
Wordpress.com and self-hosted Worpress 2.2 installations ship default with a free Blogger Importer plugin that can be accessed from your Wordpress dashboard (Manage -> Import -> Blogger)

All you have to do is authorize Wordpress to use your Google account and Wordpress will display a list of blogs associated with Blogger account. Select the blog that you like to import in blogger and click import. Voila!

All your posts, comments, categories (Blogger labels) and users will be visible in Wordpress in few minutes depending on the size of your Blogger Blog.

Even if you have no plans to switch from Blogger to Wordpress, this is still an excellent option to create a backup of all the posts and comments from the Blogger blog.

For Geeks: This Wordpress-Blogger Importer will not change anything in your Blogger hosted blog - neither the timestamp formats nor the blogger templates. It simple uses the Google Blogger API to fetch the blogger posts into Wordpress.

The Blogger Importer script will however not import the Blogger images to your Wordpress installation. And there's no way to specify filters on your Blogger posts - everything will be imported in one go.

Wallpaper Roller to Decorate Your Home With Flickr Pictures

Some may confuse Wallpeppr with another cool Web 2.0 app that turns Flickr images into attractive desktop wallpapers. But it's something very different.

Wallpeppr is a special Wallpaper roller that hooks to your computer via a cable and lets you paint Flickr images on the physical walls of your room.

Flickr Pictures Room Walls
The Wallpeppr software connects to the Flickr website and transfers your favorite picture to the roller which prints it on the wall with ink as you roll over.

Sorry, you cannot buy this "Flickr roller" yet. [The guy in the picture is actually painting the wall with a Flickr picture, not removing or covering the wallpaper with paint roller]

Upload and Save Microsoft Office Documents Online in One Click

Box.net, the online file storage service that offers 1GB of free storage space, has developed some excellent add-ons that could make this service a darling for Microsoft Office users.

Box.net offers a virtual file explorer for your uploaded documents, pictures and videos. You can put this file explorer anywhere in your website and visitors can easily navigate through your files, download them offline or they can subscribe to your files in their newsreader.

Today, Box.net unveiled another useful service called "Office on Demand" - this is an add-on for your Microsoft Office programs that will let you save files directly from Word, Excel or Powerpoint directly to your online Box.net account. No need to launch your web browser.

Other than the convenience factor, Box.net is tightly integrated with Zoho Docs and Zoho sheet. Even if your computer has no Office license, you can still edit the .DOC or .XLS files from Box.net directly in Zoho Office and save the edited files back to Box.net.

Download Box.net Add-on | Thanks Zoli Erdos

I am also expecting Google to release an Office plugin that will allow offline editing of documents stored in Google Docs & Spreadsheets.

Hide That SkyScraper Ad in Yahoo! Mail

Yahoo! Mail (the new DHTML version) displays a fairly unobtrusive skyscraper banner near the right edge of the browser window.

The Yahoo! ad rotates or change every time time you open a new mail message in Yahoo! mail or switch Yahoo! folders (like from Inbox to Drafts to Trash)

Yahoo Mail Ads
Now Yahoo! is giving users a chance to hide that long vertical banner if they are not interested in the advertiser's product or service. Just click the arrow bar on the right side that says "Hide Advertisement" and the ad is gone from your current view.

Don't get too excited because the ad will reappear when you open another email message or move to a different mail folder.

This is another good idea from Yahoo especially for email users who do not have a wide screen monitor - by hiding the 160pixel wide graphic, they get a much larger viewing area for their emails.

Trivia: Unlike the contextual ads of Gmail (which vary depending on the text of your email), Yahoo! Mail ads are geo-targeted but not contextual in nature. via

Recognize Websites in Google Search Results Quickly

Amanda Congdon PictureHow do you search for something on Google ?

Type the keyword, quickly glance at the website URLs of top 10 search results (they're in green color) and then visit the sites which you think are legitimate and not spam.

Here's a better alternative to help you visualize Google search results faster - add corresponding website favicons (those 16x16 pixel images that you normally see in the address bar) next to every search result.

For our example, we googled for ABC News anchor and ex-Rocketboom host - Amanda Congdon - and here's the snapshot from Google search.

Notice that each result has a favicon and if you are an avid surfer, you can easily figure out the destination website without looking at the green URL.

Amanda Congdon Search on Google
The results are from Wikipedia, ABC News, Blogspot, Rocketboom, Technorati and Forbes in the same order. Most of us can guess the destination from the site icon itself.

To automatically add these favicons to Google search results, just grab either the CustomizeGoogle or Google Icon extension from the Mozilla add-ons website.

Create Animated Charts and Flash Graphs for your Website

To watch this animated Flash chart, please visit outside the reader.

Online spreadsheet programs like Zoho Sheet or Google Docs allow you to plot different types of charts and graphs that you can save as images and embed them in your blog or website.

The problem with these static image charts is that if the source data changes, you have to redo the entire exercise of creating the chart. Another reason - they do not look as attractive as their Flash based counterparts which we'll discuss here.

Th most popular toolkit for creating and embedding animated charts in web pages is XML / SWF Charts - absolutely free, creates dynamic charts and supports a plethora of chart types with animated transitions.

Create a text file that contains the spreadsheet tabular data and pass that as a parameter to the Flash chart. If some part of data changes, just modify this text file and the chart on your webpage will always show the current data. A brilliant software - very flexible and creates professional looking charts.

The only issue with XML SWF charts is that you need to upload the chart animation files and data files manually to some web server before using them on your webpages. If that sounds too much effort, you'll love FusionCharts which have a free version and can be embedded inside any page through Google Gadgets.

Just type your chart data inside this FC Google Gadget, choose a chart type, dimensions, color scheme and copy-paste the generated code in your blog.

The charts look stunning and like Google Finance charts, visitors can read the value by moving the mouse over the charts.

Finally, if you need a more visual interface and don't mind the company's logo, use the good old Rich Chart Live for creating Flash charts online. It's a web based Flash charting service.

[This post is based on a request from Holden Karnofsky who's looking for the best software to create interactive charts on the web - choices are FusionCharts, Dundas, Swiff/GlobFX, Aspose, PopCharts]

Wacom Bamboo Pen Tablet for Windows Vista

Wacom Tablet PenWacom today introduced a new pen tablet for Windows Vista and Office 2007 that is designed as an ergonomic replacement of your mouse and also brings Tablet PC specific features of Vista like Handwriting recognition, gesture control and Pen flicks to your desktop or notebook computer.

Like your school pencil, Bamboo tablet pens have an eraser at the opposite end to quickly delete text or erase sketches. It comes with an A6 sized tablet that also has an inbuilt touch ring to simulate the zoom and scrolling wheel of the mouse.

While the high-end Intuos or Graphire Pen tablets are meant for digital artists and tech enthusiasts, Wacom is targeting the mass market with Bamboo Pen tablet - users who have migrated from XP to Vista and need to utilize the Pen related features in Vista without investing in a Tablet PC.

Wacom Bamboo Vista Pen
If you have never heard of Pen Tablets like Intuos or Graphire, think of them as a pen shaped cordless mouse that requires no battery and can perform all the functions of a normal Tablet PC pen more naturally (including freehand writing)

You can play InkBall, take notes in Microsoft OneNote in your own handwriting, mark-up documents with digital ink in Office 2007, or paint inside Corel Painter and Photoshop. It feels as if you are writing or drawing with a real pen on a piece of actual paper.

Don't miss the Tablet PC fun on your desktop again.

Yahoo! Mail Removes Limit on Mailbox Storage Space

Yahoo Unlimited Storage Space
Yahoo! Mail is doing everything right to retain existing users and attract new ones.

First they completely redesigned the Yahoo! Mail interface to make it look fresh and appealing. Next is the offer queue is unlimited storage space.

John Kremer of Yahoo! Mail has just announced that Yahoo! Mail, starting today, is gradually upgrading the email accounts of all users with infinite storage space.
When it hits your account, you’ll notice the storage meter has disappeared - meaning, you just don’t have to worry about deleting old messages ever again!
Here's a quick comparison of the mailbox sizes offered by various web based email services.

GMail (Google Mail) - 2.5 GB (growing)

Windows Live Hotmail - 2 GB

Yahoo Mail! - 1 GB

Lycos Mail - 3 GB

Rediffmail - Unlimited {popular in India}

The only issue is with the email attachment sizes - Except Lycos which allows email attachments of unlimited size, all other services impose a size restriction which varies anywhere between 10 MB and 16 MB (for AOL).

Therefore, in order to backup those 100 meg video in your Yahoo! Mail account, you will have to split the file into separate emails.

Send FAX via Email or a Web Interface - Free FAX Service

Send Internet Fax FreeIf you send documents over FAX very rarely, it doesn't make much sense to invest in a traditional fax machine - Internet based online FAX services are plenty and should be good enough for you in most cases.

Today we share a very interesting email to fax service that is absolutely free, you can send an unlimited number of faxes and best of all, the service covers most cities in the world.

Called TMC, this Internet fax service allows you write a FAX message either in a based web form or you can send an email message to a special address that contains the fax machine number of the recipient as well as the coverpage text.

For instance, if you like to congratulate Sergey Brin on his marriage with Anne Wojcicki, send an email to the following address:

remote-printer.Sergey_Brin/Google_Inc@16502530001.iddd.tpc.int

[Google fax machine number: 650-253-0001]

The cover page of the fax will say:

Please deliver this facsimile to:
   Sergey Brin
   Google Inc.

TMC Fax can also deliver image attachments and rich text formatted messages on the recipient's fax machine. If the fax message delivery fails for some reason, you get a failure notification via email.

TPC FAX | Global Coverage

Even if you have a fax machine, these email to fax services remove the waiting time that it takes for your fax machine to scan and deliver the message. Rajesh says that FAX messages are not delivered immediately. They are sent at night when traffic is low.

The Language Problem When Using Blogger, Google Notebook from Another Country

English speaking users of Google Notebook and Blogger face a strange problem when they access these Google services from another country like China, Thailand, Korea, Japan, Russia, etc where the native language is not English.

Google will try to determine your country location through the computer's IP address, and will automatically set the default language of these services to the official language of the country from where you have logged in.

Google Notebook, Blogger Language Fix
So even if English is your preferred language in Google Account, you will see Google Notebook interface in German if you check the site from Switzerland or in Spanish if you are based in Mexico.

DI reader Wildeny is therefore not pleased because he has to constantly change the language from Chinese to English each time he logs into either Blogger or Google Notebook. He writes:
Why on earth does Google want to do that? Don't they know living in some country doesn't mean its language is his/her mother tongue? Even though it's the case, should the users have the choice to set their preferable language?
Wildeny, here's a solution for you that should override the default Google behaviour:

Default Language For Google Notebook

For unknown reasons, Google doesn't provide an easy option to switch languages in Google Notebook but you can always access the service in any of the supported languages by appending the language code (e.g. ?hl=en) to the google.com/notebook address.

If that sounds geeky, just click the language of your choice here and Google Notebook will skip checking your physical location.

English English (UK) Français Italiano Deutsch Español Русский Nederlands Türkçe Dansk Norsk Svenska suomi Português do Brasil 한국어 日本語 中文(繁體) 中文(简体) ภาษาไทย

Default Language For Google Blogger

Clear your Internet temp folder and make sure that you have enabled cookies in the web browser. Now open the webpage at blogger.com/language.g and check your preferred language. Click Save settings.

The other option, like Google Notebook, is to bookmark the blogger.com page that corresponds to your default language. Pick the right one from the following list.

English English (UK) Français Italiano Deutsch Español Русский Nederlands Türkçe Dansk Norsk Svenska suomi Português do Brasil 한국어 日本語 中文(繁體) 中文(简体) ภาษาไทย

PS: The above trick will work just fine for non-English speaking users who are in US or UK and need to translate the Blogger or Google Notebook interface from English to their native language. Just append the ?hl=[language code] to the URL.

Disable Touch Pad of your Laptop; Avoid Erratic Cursor Movement When Typing

Some notebook users find the touch pad annoying because at times, while typing fast, their thumbs accidentally brush up against the touchpad. This is frustrating because the mouse cursor jumps to a random location on the screen and can cause undesirable things.

To turn off the touchpad when an external mouse or other pointing device is present, you can goto the Control Panel and double click the Mouse properties icon.

Click the Device Select tab and check "Disable Touch Pad when USB Pointing Device is present." The cursor will no longer move via the touchpad.

HP Sony Dell Touchpad
Alternatively, you can permanently disable the touchpad of your laptop by clicking the "Disable Device" in the Touch Pad setting. Advanced users can disable the touchpad from the BIOS setup [press F2 when the computer is booting to enter BIOS settings]

Unfortunately, there are no keyboard shortcuts to enable/disable Touchpad movement or tapping. You can however drag the Mouse icon from the control panel to your Quick launch bar for quick access.

If that sounds too much effort, you may consider adjusting the sensitivity of the touchpad. This can be accessed from the Touch Pad tab of our mouse properties. Choose a low setting.

Turn Off Touch Pad
I have tested this on a Dell Inspiron notebook that ship with the Alps TouchPad Driver but should work perfect with your Sony Vaio or HP laptops that come with Synaptics TouchPad software.

SlipStream Windows Installer CD with all Hotfixes Released Since XP SP2

What do you do next after installing a fresh copy of Windows XP SP2 from the installation CD supplied by Microsoft ?

Chances are that you'll connect to the Windows Update website and wait for your computer to download and install the hundreds of security patches / updates released by the Windows team since the launch of XP SP2. Imagine if you have do repeat the exercise on your laptop.

Windows XP Slipstream
One of the options we discussed sometime back was AutoPatcher XP - it contains all Windows XP hotfixes neatly packaged into an Microsoft style installer. Just run the program over your existing copy of XP SP2 and it will patch it with all the available Windows updates without connecting to the computer.

The only issue with AutoPatcher XP is that it takes two steps - you first have to install the XP SP2 on a computer and then run the AutoPatcher XP program to patch the Windows installation. How about combining them into a single step ?

Enter RyanVM MSFN pack - Unlike AutoPatcher XP which updates your Windows XP SP2 installation, RyanVM's pack will integrate all patches and hotfixes into your installation CD itself [also called slipstreaming]

This post XP SP2 patch slipstream option is supported for English versions of Windows XP Home and Windows XP Professional. Life would have been much smoother had Microsoft not delayed the release of Windows XP SP3 but until then, you can build the XP SP3 installer disk with RyanVM.

How to Create a Blog on Blogger - Dummies Guide

Googler Karl, who is a support co-ordinator for Blogger, has posted a quick screencast demo for newbies who wish to start a blog on the Blogger platform.

Most of you will find the screencast very basic but this video is definitely a good starting point for moms who have never seen Blogger before.

And we do see an interesting trend - Googlers are increasingly producing screencasts and publishing them on YouTube to showcase features of the products and software they are working on.

YouTube, MySpace and PhotoBucket Blocked from Military Computers

The US Defense Department has blocked access to websites like YouTube, MySpace, Hi5, Photobucket, MTV, Pandora for soldiers who are serving in countries like Iraq or Afghanistan.

Blocked Websites in Iraq
Unlike nations like China, Iran or UAE where sites are banned due to cultural or political reasons, Pentagon is citing insufficient bandwidth and declining productivity as primary reasons behind this latest blanked ban on music and photo sharing websites.

Soldiers can still access blocked sites on their personal computers that do not use the military network for connecting to the Internet.

Some argue that this ban is imposed to prevent soldiers from uploading video clips on YouTube or watching videos / pictures posted by Iraqi militants. But will this prevent them from uploading videos to YouTube via email ?

According to Time, the sites covered by the ban are YouTube, Metacafe, IFilm, StupidVideos, PhotoBucket, MySpace, Hi5, Pandora, MTV, 1.fm, and live365.

Unless Pentagon imposes a ban on email, soldiers can easily share pictures and videos with the external world even if they cannot watch or download what others have uploaded on the internet.

Shhhh! A Secret Google Search URL That Removes Adsense Ads

Google Search Without Adsense Shhhh!Google makes most of their money from online advertising.

While it is technically possible to block Google ads on web pages through Firefox extensions or by modifying the hosts file, these hiding methods are mostly implemented by tech-savvy users and may not have that big an effect on Google's revenue.

However, here's a secret trick - if you append the parameter "output=googleabout" to Google Web Search URL, the search results page will not carry any AdSense ads that are otherwise seen on the top and right sections of the page.

Here's a direct URL to search Google minus Adsense/Adwords ads:

google.com/search?output=googleabout

Not sure why this parameter is in place but this default Google page could have a serious impact on their bottom line since it allows users to search Google sans advertisements without installing any geeky hacks. Thanks Vedrashko.

The following lines, when added to the Windows HOSTS file, will block Google from serving ads on your computer and won't track your visits on sites that use Google Analytics.

Windows Live Folders - Microsoft File Storage Service is Out

Windows Live Folders, the online file hosting and sharing service from Microsoft, is now available in public beta. Each folder and file uploaded on Windows Live folders will have their own unique web address (URL).

Windows Live Folders
Windows Live Folder currently provides 500 MB of free storage space while individual files should be less than 50 MB in size.

Windows Live Folders - The service was code-named Live Drive.

Files can only be uploaded to Windows Live Folders via a web browser (IE or Firefox). You can create personal, shared, and public folders.

Chris has more more details and screenshots of Windows Live Folders on LiveSide.

It may be a bit premature to say if AOL XDrive will feel any heat from Windows Live Folders because the former offers 10x more space and there's even a desktop software to upload files from Windows Explorer.

Microsoft has neither released any desktop based file uploading client nor any tool to sync the online and offline file folders.

Update: Windows Live Folders website folders.live.com is now offline.
